Cheerleading has long been a space of performance, athleticism, and teamwork. But beyond the high-energy routines and powerful stunts, it also has the potential to be a beacon of inclusivity. In recent years, LGBTQ+ representation in cheerleading has become more visible, and with that visibility comes a greater responsibility to ensure that cheer remains an inclusive, affirming space for all athletes.

Breaking Barriers in Sports

Historically, sports have not always been the most welcoming environment for LGBTQ+ individuals. Many athletes have faced barriers—whether from systemic exclusion, outdated stereotypes, or a lack of representation. Cheerleading, however, has been a unique exception in many ways. While mainstream sports often emphasize rigid gender roles, cheer has provided an avenue where self-expression and authenticity can thrive.

Yet, despite its reputation for being more accepting, challenges remain. Male cheerleaders, particularly those who identify as LGBTQ+, have often been subjected to scrutiny, while gender-nonconforming and trans athletes continue to fight for visibility and acceptance in cheer spaces. True inclusivity means ensuring that every athlete—regardless of gender identity or sexual orientation—feels safe, seen, and valued.

The Power of Inclusive Spaces

When LGBTQ+ individuals see themselves represented in sports, it sends a powerful message: you belong here. It fosters confidence, strengthens community, and inspires the next generation of athletes to pursue their passion without fear.

At Gotham Cheer, we embrace this philosophy wholeheartedly. As an LGBTQ+-affirming cheer team, we create a space where athletes can bring their whole selves to the mat. Whether someone joins to perform, give back to the community, or simply find a place where they feel at home, we are committed to making cheer a space where everyone is welcome.

More Than Just a Sport—A Movement

Representation in cheerleading is about more than just numbers—it’s about shifting the narrative of what inclusion in sports should look like. It’s about challenging stereotypes, advocating for equal opportunities, and celebrating the diversity that makes our teams stronger.

By championing LGBTQ+ athletes in cheer, we show the world that sports can be a place of joy, acceptance, and strength. And as we continue to push for greater inclusion in cheer and beyond, we reaffirm a simple truth: everyone deserves a team that lifts them up—both on and off the mat.

Join us in making cheer a place where everyone belongs.
