Gotham Cheer cheerleaders at weekly Spring season practice

Whether you’re stepping into cheer for the very first time or returning after a break, your first practice can feel exciting—and maybe a little overwhelming. But don’t worry, Gotham Cheer has your back. We’re breaking down everything you need to know before your first practice, so you can show up confident, prepared, and ready to BRING IT.

1. What Is Cheerleading, Really?

Cheerleading is more than pom-poms and chants—it’s an athletic, team-driven sport that combines dance, tumbling, stunts, and a whole lot of spirit. At Gotham Cheer, we blend traditional cheer skills with performance, creativity, and community. Whether you're here to hit zero or just hit the beat, there’s a spot for you.

2. Gear Up: What to Wear and Bring

You don’t need to show up in full uniform (yet!), but here’s what you should have on hand:

  • Athletic wear: Think leggings, shorts, or fitted tees/tanks. You want something you can move freely in. Avoid baggy clothes—they can get in the way during stunts.

  • Cheer shoes: If you don’t have cheer-specific shoes yet, clean sneakers with good support will do for now.

  • Hair tied back: You’ll thank us later.

  • Water bottle: Hydration is a must.

  • Positive attitude: We’re all about teamwork and lifting each other up—literally and emotionally.

3. Terms to Know

Here are a few cheer terms that might come up:

  • Base/Flyer/Backspot: Roles in stunting. Bases lift, flyers fly, and backspots keep things stable.

  • Counts: Everything runs on 8-counts—timing is key.

  • Hit: When a stunt or motion lands perfectly.

  • Sharp: Movements should be clean, quick, and intentional.

  • Spirit: Bring the energy! Smiles, facials, and crowd involvement matter.

4. What to Expect at Your First Practice

Your first practice might start with:

  • Warm-ups and stretching: Flexibility helps prevent injuries.

  • Conditioning: Some core, cardio, or strength work.

  • Motions + Jumps: You’ll go over basics like high V, low V, toe touches, and more.

  • Stunting (if applicable): Depending on your level and the team, you might start working in small groups.

  • Choreography: Don’t worry if you can’t keep up right away—this part gets easier with time.

Pro tip: Ask questions. Everyone starts somewhere, and cheer is a team effort. Gotham Cheer is a supportive space where learning is part of the journey.

5. Mindset Matters

Cheer is just as mental as it is physical. Here are a few things to remember:

  • You don’t have to be perfect. Progress > perfection.

  • Stay coachable. Take feedback with an open mind—your coaches want to help you grow.

  • Have fun! We’re here to work hard and enjoy the ride.

6. Gotham Cheer Culture

At Gotham Cheer, we’re about more than just stunts and spirit fingers. We value community, diversity, inclusivity, and giving back. When you join us, you’re joining a family. One that cheers for each other—on and off the mat.
